Client
A locally produced literary publication gives a platform to emerging writers and artists in the Pacific Northwest and beyond.
Challenge
Broaden the primary literary audience to include individuals from other creative professions, while developing a more compelling layout to reflect its creative content.
Design Solution
Developed a dynamic layout including large, bold images, in tandem with unexpected pull quotes, color, and images to break up and draw attention to each literary piece. It was also my intention to have the words be the primary force on the page.
Client
Seattle Central Community College
Challenge
Design a vinyl window display for an off campus site clearly branding it as part of the college, reflecting the vibrant, youthful quality of the Capitol Hill neighborhood.
Design Solution
Designer Donna Belnavis and I collaborated to create a design showcasing Seattle Central's student body, revealing the positive impact
the school has on the community.
Challenge
To develop a unique alphabet and push the boundary of how to define letter forms and typography.
Design Solution
I experimented with using found objects
as tools to make letters, such as the teeth
of a plastic comb or the tip of my nose.
With acrylic paint and an object I drew letters, discovering the unique and unpredictable voice of each object. I manipulated these letters digitally and developed a pattern for each to show the descriptive qualities of the forms, and the way the letters can communicate in other ways than just linguistically. I displayed the entire project in a book as an intimate way for the viewer to experience the different letters.
Client
Bellevue Arts Museum, the center for the exploration of art, craft and design in the Pacific Northwest.
Challenge
Under the guidance of Director of Marketing and Membership Manager, redesign the museum's membership brochure, creating a fresh, updated look that more boldly speaks to the museum audience.
Design Solution
Using photography and color brought emphasis to the unique architecture of the building, further branding marketing materials in association with the Bellevue Arts Museum. Established a more approachable and friendly marketing piece that readily and beautifully relays membership content.
Challenge
Redesign and brand this small local gallery by emphasizing that Halogen focuses on making art accessible to a broad audience.
Design Solution
The project was created and developed by three designers, Chris Zapala, Nevena Stoeve and myself, along with photographer
Matthew Casey.
We created the concept "Cherish Your Art", emphasizing Halogen Gallery makes art accessible. The familiar icon of a red-wagon or a keepsake box, suggests the gallery's role of making art a part of your everyday life.
My role was to design the brochure, business card, and magnet set.
Challenge
Create a brand concept for a conceptual line
of wines, developing a modern, contemporary package emphasizing the wine and bottle shape while communicating a clear concept.
Design Solution
Developed a packaging line based around the concept "to punctuate." As a punctuation mark completes the sentence, so does a fine glass of wine complete a meal. The overall look is minimal and focuses on the bold, heavy lines of the typography. Each type of wine is paired with an appropriate punctuation mark that reflects the quality of the wine.
Client
Local restaurant with an eclectic, friendly atmosphere that promotes serving truly authentic Mexican food.
Challenge
Develop a cohesive, more refined
brand identity.
Design Solution
Created a logo, reflecting the unique, friendly, and authentic quality of the restaurant. I drew inspiration from traditional Mexican Paper Cutting, applying similar motifs to the logo's design, stationery set, and menu. Selected saturated colors reflecting the rich quality of the food and vibrant nature of the restaurant.
Challenge
Redesign the graphics for the novel
The Shipping News, creating a cohesive look while speaking to the quiet, yet moving essence of the story.
Design Solution
Redesigned and produced all aspects of the book--cover, illustrations, and internal layout of all text. Throughout the redesign I reference the sea--from the hand sewn illustrations to the pale blue color used for emphasis. The sea plays an important role in the character's lives.
